Anne Hathaway and new Academy President Tom Sherak made the announcement of nominees for the 82nd Oscar ceremony, early the morning of February 2, 2010. In the announced nominations, a couple of surprises were definitely on display (“The Secret of Kells?); however, by and large Should I See It’s panel research netted some pretty favorable results, certainly in the big categories. Many surprises came in the technical categories not announced live on television. Here’s a look at the nominees and a summary of Should I See It’s first attempt at predicting the nominees…

If you surveyed my thoughts on the Screen Actors Guild Awards where I indicated that “The Hurt Locker” was in trouble for the Oscar win, well…the game has potentially changed again in 24 short hours. The Producers Guild has awarded “The Hurt Locker” with its Best Film prize.

The actors have made their feelings known and in somewhat surprising fashion. First, the Actors Guild surprised many by not nominating “Up In The Air” for its Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture award. The first signs that “Up In The Air” may not have saturated deeply within the Academy’s voters as experts thought. Then, the awards took place and the largest voting body within the Academy bestowed Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” with its highest honor.

Well that was interesting. The Golden Globes have concluded and if you buy into the belief that 80 international journalists can turn the tide of an Oscar race, then tonight switched up the game a bit. Although, if you track back through the Golden Globe Awards recent winners, they match up with Oscar with a lot less frequency. While the debate will rage on about how much Oscar watchers should consider the results of the Golden Globes, significant numbers of voters are in the room and are schmoozing, meeting and greeting, and looking for something to make them check the box or color in the bubble. So, we shall see where things go from here. The Screen Actors Guild weigh in on January 23, 2010, and then its full steam ahead to February 2, 2010 – Nomination morning.

Ricky Gervais takes the mic for the Golden Globe Awards, tonight at 5:00 ET/PT on NBC. Gervais’ caustic wit and sarcasm has been coveted by the Academy the last couple of years for the Oscar telecast. However, Gervais has reportedly turned them down each time, only to accept the job as the first Golden Globes host in many a year. Anticipation is high for the show. Winners will be posted later on in case you miss the show, but here are the film and television nominees.

If you watched the show, it was frankly a rather shoddy and poorly directed affair. Random cutaways to non-nominees, poor audio for Death Cab For Cutie’s John Hughes’ tribute. Kristen Chenoweth was – how should I say this delicately, not at her best in any way, shape, or form. It’s not often that I have seen a host annoy and make more actors cower on camera before. Perhaps, Ricky Gervais will also accomplish this in a more entertaining fashion this Sunday at the Golden Globes.
