Seattle, WA. – The Seattle Film Critics Society has announced nominations for the 2023 Seattle Film Critics Society Awards, honoring the year’s best in film. Leading the field with 11 nominations is Yorgos Lanthimos’s inventive fantasy Poor Things and Martin Scorsese’s sweeping historical epic Killers of the Flower Moon.
Poor Things received nominations for Best Picture, Director, Lead Actress (Emma Stone), Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Screenplay, Cinematography, Costume Design, Editing, Original Score, Production Design, and Visual Effects.
Killers of the Flower Moon received nominations for Best Picture, Director, Lead Actress (Lily Gladstone), Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro), Ensemble Cast, Cinematography, Costume Design, Editing, Original Score, Production Design, and Villain of the Year for Robert De Niro’s portrayal of William “King” Hale. In December, former Seattleite Gladstone was honored with the inaugural SFCS John Hartl Pacific Northwest Spotlight Award, recognizing her for an exceptional body of work during 2023.
Christopher Nolan's expansive biopic about the father of the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer, received 9 nominations, for Best Picture, Director, Actor (Cillian Murphy), Ensemble Cast, Cinematography, Editing, Original Score, Production Design, and Visual Effects.
Greta Gerwig’s colorful Barbie received 9 nominations, for Best Picture, Director, Lead Actress (Margot Robbie), Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Ensemble Cast, Costume Design, Production Design, Youth Performance (Ariana Greenblatt), and Villain of the Year for The Patriarchy (represented by the Kens).
Celine Song's debut feature about two souls connecting across many decades, Past Lives, received 5 nominations: Best Picture, Director, Lead Actress (Greta Lee), Screenplay, and Editing.
Alexander Payne’s holiday dramedy The Holdovers received 5 nominations: Best Picture, Lead Actor (Paul Giamatti), Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), Ensemble Cast, and Screenplay.
Jonathan Glazer’s shattering and monumental The Zone of Interest also received 5 nominations: Best Picture, Supporting Actress (Sandra Hüller), International Film, Cinematography, and Original Score.
Other films earning multiple nominations include: American Fiction, Godzilla Minus One, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (4 each); Anatomy of a Fall and May December (3 each); Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., The Boy and the Heron, Even Hell Has Its Heroes, Monster, The Creator, and M3GAN each received 2 nominations.
