The second film in the Disneynature series of documentaries, “Oceans” is not simply a recut version of an earlier documentary (Disneynature’s “Earth” was a remix of BBC America’s “Planet Earth” miniseries), but an original feature which gives viewers a stunning and breathtaking view of oceanic life few have ever seen.

Paced with tempered narration by Pierce Brosnan, the movie is easy to watch (especially in Blu-Ray) and offers some unique perspectives and images that for much of the first hour are mesmerizing and rather fascinating. From its sheer creation, this is a difficult movie to hate or dislike; however, it may lose you along the way. With “Oceans”, Disneynature has made a fantastic and visually captivating theatrical film that fits just as nice on the television screen as on a nature channel. And admittedly, as watchable as the film is, it begins to wear thin as it reaches the end of its scant running time. And when the narration takes a conservationist bent, some may throw up their hands.

While those who will love this film undoubtedly share a passionate love for nature documentaries, many of those with a casual interest will also find this entertaining. The younger and littlest of filmgoers may give up along the way, but Disneynature’s “Oceans” can only be so much. And for what it is, directors Jacque Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud (“Winged Migration”) do a fine job.

Should I See It?

YES

While I am not entirely sure how much you will learn from watching this, nonetheless the visual images will impress.

Fans of nature documentaries will love this and Perrin and Cluzaud prove once again their ability to craft a simple template of filmmaking into something which leaps off the screen.

NO

Pierce Brosnan, at times, feels like he could be anywhere else in the world when voicing the narration here.

If my 11-year old and 4-year old are an indicator, this movie has about a 45-minute shelf life for your similarly aged children.

Some may feel cheated when the “message” arrives.
