| “I forgot one thing…I saw her standing at the mirror with something shiny…I’m sure she was sharpening a knife!” – Catherine (Ludivine Sagnier) The French-made murder mystery musical, “8 Women”, is a curious and engaging work which plays reminiscent of the classic board game, “Clue”. Instead of Col. Mustard or Professor Plum in the library with the rope or candlestick, we get 8 female suspects representing the rich and the poor, the calm and the highstrung, the daughter and the servant, all together and snowed in around the Christmas holiday in 1950’s France.
Director Francois Ozon lays out the elements for a classic murder mystery party – the big mansion, the snowy conditions, disconnected phone lines, a lone vehicle which won’t start, and evidence of a break in which prompted silence from the vicious guard dogs outside. Naturally there’s a murder victim — Marcel, the patriarch of the family is found face down in bed, with a jagged blade sticking out of his back. So, the murderess must be present amongst the femmes stuck in the mansion…Or is something else amiss in the family home? Powered by an exceptional cast of France’s finest actresses from top to bottom, “8 Women” packs absurd humor, the slightest elements of intrigue, and engaging musical numbers. Each actress gets their proverbial closeup with a song, performed in their real voices no less. While certainly off putting to some, here the music adds to the experience, as the lyrics provide unique depth to each woman’s character and allows the viewer to engage in a different type of whodunit. With salacious plot twists and ribald shenanigans tossed in to the mix, and with its surprising conclusion, “8 Women” is far better and entertaining than one might have initially expected. |

YES You are a fan of films that mix genres and styles in an effort to create something new and unique. Although its content skews to an adult crowd, the movie feels like one of those murder mystery parties – fancy costumes and crazy absurd events taking place make it a rewarding film. |
NO Warning: Subtitles and Songs in a foreign language!!! Despite how entertaining it is, this is not a film that is a first option for most people. Ozon demands attention is paid and with it as required “reading” for many, this may be a tough watch. |
